Individual Question 1

What is Twain really teaching us? We've heard about the controversy. We've talked about his use of language and his portrayal of Jim. What do you believe Twain's real point was in writing this novel? What was he trying to show us about our society? Is society today the same as Twain's world? How is it different? How might it be the same?

Group Question 4

Personal Question 2
Twain's mocking of society has started to become evident. Certain TV
shows (Daily Show, Colbert Report, Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons,
Chappelle's Show, Family Guy, South Park, etc.) often mock today's
society. Many of the "foibles" (flaws in society) that these shows
mock are sensitive and controversial. Should some topics be off-
limits? Why or why not? Please remember that these issues are
sensitive and controversial for a reason -- phrase your responses so
as not to offend any one group or person.

Group Question 3

Personal Question 1
Let's say that after high school you chose to go off on your own
without your family or friends, instead of going to college like
"sivilization" might want you to do. Where would you go and what would
you do? Why would you choose that? (Option for responses: be polite,
but challenge assumptions and point out potential troubles and
struggles as well as advantages.)
